Hi my name is Jonathan Chen, currently a sophomore in Diamond Bar High School. I am the founder and president of YDRC Chess Club. I am a FIDE (International Chess Federation) Master and hold 3 times National Chess Champion titles. When the pandemic started in 2019, I decided to teach kids chess in Zoom in YDRC which after 3 and a half years, we have a team of 6 coaches and hundreds of students from all over the country. My favorite quote for chess is “We learn from chess the greatest maxim in life – that even when everything seems to be going badly for us, we should not lose heart, but always hoping for a change for the better, steadfastly continue searching for the solutions to our problems.” (Benjamin Franklin)

Hi My name is Jocelyn Chen, a 8 th grader in Chaparral Middle School. I am the president of YDRC Queensmove Girls’ Chess Club. I currently hold the title of FIDE’s Women’s Candidate Master. I won Gold Metal for US Team in North American Youth Chess Championship in Mexico. I started to learn chess around the age of 5 and it has become an inseparable part of my life ever since then. I also love science and I am a member of the Science Olympiad Team.

My name is Jerry Chang. I am an 8th grader at Medea Creek Middle School in Oak Park, CA. I have been teaching chess at the YDRC chess club since I was in sixth grade. I am also an editor at chessconnections.org. I got an early start on my chess education and went on to study under renowned international masters from Southern California and Kentucky. My chess rating is among the greatest, with a rating of over 1850, making me one of the best in my age group. I won first place in the section under 1800 at the 42nd Memorial Day Classic Chess Tournament in 2022.I also oversee the chess club at Medea Creek Middle School. Outside of chess, I enjoy playing music (piano, clarinet, and saxophone). I am a clarinetist for the California All-State JHS Symphonic Band (CBDA) and the Ventura Honor Band of 2023. Additionally, I am the key player in the SMBC West Volleyball Club, which holds a prestigious tradition in the Southern California Volleyball tournament.

Hi I am Robin Shen, a 9th grader at Ayala High School. Currently I am a coach for YDRC Chess Club, teaching beginner level classes. I have been studying chess since I was a second-grade student. I also love speech and debate which helps me a lot with my teaching for chess. I ranked 9th place in 2023 California Invitational Berkeley Debate. I also got 2nd place team trophy in math and 3rd place team trophy in engineering in National TSA Math and Engineering Competition. I would love to help kids who have passion in chess to improve their skills.

I’;m Daniel Shao, a sophomore at Diamond Bar High School. I am currently a coach for YDRC Chess Club for “New to Chess” class. I first became interested in chess during the primary years of quarantine, when I picked up the game as a hobby. Over time, I taught myself and became better by watching youtube videos, studying chess tactics, and learning openings. I have been playing for over two years now, in which I achieved a peak rating of 1790 on lichess. I find chess to be a very enjoyable brain-exercise that I will be able to continuously improve through more time and training.

Hi, my name is Andrew Zhen and I am a 7th grade student at Loving Savior Lutheran school. I am a coach for the YDRC Puzzle Club. I have been playing chess since I was 6 years old. My Uschess rating is 1400, and I have won many prizes in chess, including 2nd place in the U.S. Open under 1200 section, 2 time 2nd place in the American Junior Championship, and many more awards. In addition to chess, I also love math, piano, and golf. This is my 1st year volunteering at YDRC, and I can’t wait to show many more children the fun of chess.
